Adelaide Showground Farmers Market

From Scratch Patisserie Apple Pastry

Cherries, Mulberries and Strawberries

Pistachio and Cherry Breton

I recently became a member of the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market ($62 a year) so now I visit each week. My favourite stalls are probably From Scratch Patisserie and B.D Farms Paris Creek (they sell dairy products like yoghurt, quark and cheese).

Jolley's Boathouse

Chermoula Spiced Baby Chicken, Moroccan Eggplant Salad, Pearl Couscous $32
King George Whiting, Cauliflower Puree, Mushrooms, Broccolini, Duck, Prosciutto and Basil $36
Crisp Fried Tea Smoked Duck, Chinese Spinach, Pineapple and Tamarind Caramel $38

Jolley's Boathouse is a popular restaurant situated by the serene River Torrens, just a stone’s throw away from Parliament House and the Festival Theatre. It serves Modern Australian fare in a converted boathouse.

The Food
  • The Chermoula gave the chicken a lovely, spicy flavour and the addition of pearl couscous added an element of novelty
  • King George Whiting is unique to Australia and is mainly found along the south coast of the country. The fish was cooked to retain its natural flavour and its texture was silky smooth
  • The duck was succulent and tender and the tamarind and pineapple sauce imparted a fresh and tangy flavour that harmonized the dish

Chianti Classico

Buttermilk & vanilla pancakes: with 'frutti di bosco', mascarpone cream and house made torrone $15.9
Chargrilled Black Angus Fillet with Housemade Chips, Fried Egg and Mustard Sauce $17.9
Three Course Tasting Plate of Bircher Muesli, Waffle with Banana Butterscotch Sauce and Almond Brittle, Frittata filled with Peas, Fontina and Crisp Pancetta $19.9

Chianti Classico, owned by the Favaro family is a delightful little Italian restaurant in the city. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. Most impressively they were awarded best breakfast in 2009 by the Restaurant & Catering Association of Australia. Upon discovering this, I decided to make a visit and I was not disappointed.

The Food
  • The pancakes were the highlight of the morning being light, fluffy and melt-in-mouth.
  • The steak was cooked to perfect medium rare and complemented the mustard sauce flawlessly. The fried egg was free range from the Cleland Gully SA
  • The tasting platter was another winner as it featured three small portions of muesli, waffle and frittata so is perfect for someone who wants to try a bit of everything
  • The coffee was also superb, the way a real Italian espresso should be – rich and aromatic with a lingering flavour.

Haigh's Berry Chocs

Berry Chocs: Strawberry and Raspberry Flavoured Centres with White Chocolate Coating then Coated in Milk and Dark Chocolate 300g $17.95

Haigh’s Chocolates was founded in Adelaide in 1915. The original store is still trading at the Beehive Corner building down the King William St end of Rundle Mall. On this particular visit, these Berry Chocs catch my eye. They resembled FruChocs (another South Australian icon) and were certainly just as delightful. I especially enjoyed letting the double layers of chocolate melt in my mouth to find the soft and fruity berry centres inside.

The Brasserie

Ferguson’s: Crumbed King George Whiting, House-made Chips, Coriole Aged Sweet Vinegar, Murray River Pink Salt $33
M.M Waechter Dux: Confit Duck Leg, Seared Breast, Ingy’s Orange, Soubise $31
Coorong Black Angus: Hand selected Coorong Black Angus T-Bone, mash, Marco Mushroom House Field Mushroom, Café de Paris Butter $36

The Brasserie is situated inside the Hilton Hotel, only a short stroll from the Adelaide Central Markets. True to its aim of being ‘Seriously South Australian’, the menu showcases some of the state’s finest produce and educates diners about the background of their key ingredients. Throughout the night, I caught sight of the head chef Simon Bryant who also features on the popular program ‘The Cook & the Chef” with Maggie Beer.

The Food
  • The fish and chips were generous in size and were cooked the way real fish and chips should be. Light and golden battered fish was complemented with rustic chips that were crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.
  • The steak was cooked to perfection and so soft and tender and full of flavour. Paired with a glass of local Barossa shiraz it was a match made in heaven.
  • The citrus notes in the duck main brought out the sweetness in the tender duck. The flavours of sweet and savoury were perfectly balanced.
I left the restaurant truly satisfied and I felt better educated about the top quality produce that SA has to offer (makes me proud to be South Australian) but what really was icing on the cake was that I received a text the next day thanking me for dining!

Lyndoch Lavender Farm

Gourmet Lavender Dessert Platter
While on a wine tasting tour around the Barossa Valley, we stop by the Lyndoch Lavender Farm and Café. Here, I am tempted by the petite five course lavender desserts platter. Lavender is such a rare ingredient in Australian cooking yet it lends such a wonderful flavour to desserts especially chocolate. Instore you will also find a unique range of gourmet lavender products including jam, chutney, honey and also lavender beauty products.

Citrus

Chilli, Garlic and Basil Scrambled Free Range Eggs with Lyndoch Valley Bacon and Charred Soughdough $13
Smoked Ham, Slow Roasted Tomato and Ashgrove Cheese Omelette $14.9
French Toast with Mixed Berry Compote, Citrus Curd and Mascarpone $14.9

Citrus is located in the cosmopolitan Hutt Street in the city, which is known for its fine breakfasts. The restaurant was established in 1996 and serves Mediterranean cuisine.

The Food
  • The scrambled eggs were fresh and had a nice creamy consistency. The addition of chilli and garlic really added some extra zing and made them standout
  • The omelette was similarly made well using fresh free-range eggs, it was a lovely golden colour on the outside and full of delicious filling on the inside
  • The French toast was topped sufficiently with berries and was delightfully sweet and tart at the same time
